Short Description: Preliminary results of a study comparing the HOPE Teacher Rating Scale with other scores commonly used for identification of gifted students. The analysis explores disparities in identification rates among K-12 subgroups with diverse demographics such as socioeconomic, racial, cultural, gender, disabilities, etc., in an underserved suburban district. Presentation will indicate correlations between identification methods.
Learning Objectives:
Understand the disparities in gifted identification rates across diverse K-12 student subgroups, including race, socioeconomic status, multilingual learners, students with disabilities, and those in foster care.
Compare the HOPE Teacher Rating Scale with traditional identification measures (e.g., CogAT, NWEA MAP Growth, State assessments) to determine potential biases and gaps in current gifted identification protocols.
Apply research findings to refine local gifted identification practices, advocate for more inclusive assessment tools, and bridge the gap between research and practice in equitable gifted education.
