Psychologist The Neurodiversity Collective Succasunna, New Jersey, United States
Short Description: Gifted and twice-exceptional kids love to learn, but they don't always love school. The education system tends to be resistant to the process of Interest-Based Learning (IBL), or layering educational goals through a child’s interests. This session will explore why IBL works, how to adapt it for neurodivergent learners, and how stakeholders can advocate for it as an educational approach.
Learning Objectives:
Participants will be able to describe the eight steps of the Interest-Based Learning teaching model and how they would be implemented in a classroom lesson.
Participants will engage in activities designed to elicit student interest and workshop how to connect those interests to broader academic goals in terms of content, pace, rigor, and depth.
Participants will identify potential challenges to implementing an IBL method in their classrooms and work in groups to troubleshoot solutions to those barriers and successfully implement this methodology.
