Susan G. Assouline, Ph.D., is Emeritus Director and Emeritus Blank Endowed Chair of the Belin-Blank Center at the University of Iowa, where she also served as Distinguished Professor of School Psychology. Her career has focused on understanding individual differences, particularly in the context of twice-exceptionality. In collaboration with colleagues, including current Belin-Blank Center Director Megan Foley-Nicpon, she helped launch the Center’s research on twice-exceptional learners in 2005 through a Javits Grant focused on students with learning disabilities and autism spectrum disorder.
Dr. Assouline’s postdoctoral fellowship with the Study of Mathematically Precocious Youth (SMPY) at Johns Hopkins University inspired her work on academic acceleration and talent discovery and development. She co-edited A Nation Deceived: How Schools Hold Back America's Brightest Students, as well as A Nation Empowered: Evidence Trumps the Excuses Holding Back America’s Brightest Students, both of which are landmark publication in gifted education. Her collaborative contributions have been recognized with numerous honors, including the 2016 NAGC Distinguished Scholar Award and the 2024 Ann F. Isaacs Founders Award.
Her professional work has centered on expanding access to opportunities for discovering and developing talent in advanced learners—opportunities that not only transform individual lives but also shape a brighter collective future.
