Gilman W. Whiting serves Vanderbilt University in many capacities: Professor, Associate Chair, and Director of Graduate Studies for the Department of African American and Diaspora Studies, Director of the Scholar Identity Model Community Outreach Initiative, and Founding Chair of the Achievement Gap Institute at the Peabody College of Education.
Dr. Whiting's research interests span a wide range of topics, demonstrating his versatility and depth of knowledge. His expertise includes economic disparity, Black student achievement, educational disparity, special and gifted education, sociology of race, sports, American culture, research methods, and fatherhood initiatives.
Dr. Whiting has authored numerous scholarly articles in the field of gifted education, which have been published in prestigious journals such as Gifted Child Quarterly, Roeper Review, and Journal for Secondary Gifted Education. His work also extends to The International Journal of Sport and Society and the Conversation. He is a co-editor for Black Masculinity Revisited, a seminal book on manliness, and has authored several other book chapters.
Dr. Whiting created the Scholar Identity Modelâ„¢, a psychosocial model to assist whole communities in rethinking ways to combat academic apathy, equity in GATE, and educator training. He consults with school districts and programs both nationally and internationally.
