Emily Kuhlmann is a post-doctoral fellow in pediatric psychology at the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital, where she provides clinical services to pediatric patients coping with chronic medical conditions. She earned her PhD in Counseling Psychology from the University of Iowa, where she also contributed to research and programming at the Belin-Blank Center for Gifted Education and Talent Development. She completed her doctoral internship at the University of Wisconsin–Madison School of Medicine and Public Health with specialized training at the American Family Children’s Hospital. She is also a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor and holds a master’s degree in Rehabilitation Counseling.
Clinically, Dr. Kuhlmann is passionate about supporting children and families navigating the psychosocial impacts of chronic illness, particularly those from marginalized and underserved communities. Her research focuses on disability identity development, with a particular interest in how new chronic medical conditions and invisible disabilities shape identity in youth. She is especially interested in how young people form positive self-concepts in the context of these identities, and how cultivating a positive disability identity can promote both mental and physical health. She is committed to integrating clinical care, research, and advocacy to promote well-being and inclusive practices in pediatric healthcare settings.
