Des Moines Public Schools
Des Moines, Iowa, United States
Kelly Randleman is an Advanced Learning Consultant and Data Lead for Des Moines Public Schools, serving over 30,000 students—more than 75% of whom qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. She is dedicated to creating equitable systems for identifying advanced learners, especially those from underrepresented backgrounds.
At the 2024 NAGC Conference, Kelly presented "Universal Qualitative Screenings in K–1 Can Help Identify Underrepresented Students," reflecting her commitment to early, inclusive identification practices. She developed and manages the district’s Advanced Learning Program Identification Handbook, which guides procedures for data collection, student identification, and academic acceleration. Within the handbook, she led a shift in district protocol from using percentiles to z-scores where possible, promoting more equitable analysis.
Kelly holds a Talented and Gifted Endorsement from the University of Iowa’s Belin-Blank Center, a Master of Science in Teaching and a Reading Endorsement from Drake University, and a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology with a minor in Sociology from Grand View College.
With 15 years of classroom experience in both middle and elementary settings, Kelly has taught all core subjects, reading and math interventions, Newcomer English Language Learning, and special education—grounding her work in a deep understanding of student diversity and need.
