Short Description: Academic self-concept is an individual’s perception of their abilities in an academic environment. Importantly, academic self-concept tends to influence students’ academic achievement, academic goals, academic interests, and educational attainment. This research presentation details our development of a new scale to measure academic self-concept among gifted children and adolescents. We also demonstrate use for the scale in schools and in research.

Learning Objectives:

Participants will understand of academic self-concept and its theoretical importance to high ability students’ academic achievement.
Participants will know how to use a new scale that demonstrates both validity and reliability to measure general academic self-concept with high ability children and adolescents.
Participants will understand potential ways that the General Academic Self-Concept Scale-Extended can be used in the practice of gifted education as well as in research.
