Short Description: In the past decade, Pennsylvania welcomed 17,723 refugees from countries such as Democratic Republic of the Congo, Myanmar, and Ukraine. Somali poet Warsan Shire penned, “no one leaves home unless home chases you”; the lived experiences of gifted refugees are multi-faceted, and ground this session through counterstorytelling. Participants will learn strategies for inclusive, equitable learning spaces and trauma-informed instruction.
Learning Objectives:
Participants will understand the characteristics of a student identifying as a refugee and gifted and talented within the global displacement crisis.
Participants will develop an awareness of the impact of refugeeism and its psychological trauma on an individual’s identity, and the corresponding impact on their giftedness and education.
Participants will learn strategies for inclusive, equitable learning spaces and trauma-informed instruction for gifted refugee learners.
