Valeria Jackson is a second-generation Detroit native and a graduate of Detroit Public Schools (DPSCD). She has four young adult children: Marissa Jackson-Sow, a law professor specializing in international human rights law; Dorea, an exceptional education teacher ; Medvis, a community manager and business consultant, and Paul, a community organizer. Dr. Jackson has a Ph.D. in Linguistics and was a World Language educator for over twenty-five years. She loves to travel and in addition to several visits to France, has visited Belgium, England, Liberia, Senegal, Jamaica, Haiti, and most recently Togo, W. Africa. She uses her firsthand cultural encounters to engage her students in an in-depth understanding of cultural, social, and environmental global issues. After teaching gifted and talented students for many years in Detroit high schools, Dr. Jackson, has embraced the role of Senior Director of Gifted and Talented Education for DPSCD. She is excited about the opportunity to provide access to high quality gifted and talented education within our district, especially for children who are underrepresented in GATE programs. She views GATE and exceptional education programs that embrace children/families from all communities as key components to achieving justice and equity in our 21st century society.
